On January 4, 1966 On Kawara created his first date painting and began a continuous, theoretically unlimited series „Today“ that includes over 2000 individual images. In theory, the concept is working for an unlimited time - and now? ... I lead Kawara´s life work now with my own funds and inquire as artistically is the lifetime of artworks in the context of time and space - also after death. On Kawara works are in the collections of many international museums, including the Kunstmuseum Basel, the Museum Ludwig in Cologne and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In February 2015 a major retrospective opens at the Guggenheim New York. We do not know where On Kawara is now, here is the date painting of the date of his death, which I created just in time. My condolences to his family.
Am 4. Januar 1966 erschuf On Kawara sein erstes Date Painting und begann damit eine fortlaufende, theoretisch zeitlich unbegrenzte Serie „Today“, die über 2000 einzelne Bilder umfasst. Theoretisch zeitlich unbegrenzt - und jetzt? ... Ich führe On Kawaras Lebenswerk nun mit eigenen Mitteln fort und untersuche künstlerisch so die Lebensdauer von Kunst im Kontext von Zeit und Raum. Arbeiten On Kawaras befinden sich in den Sammlungen vieler internationaler Museen, darunter das Kunstmuseum Basel, das Museum Ludwig in Köln und das Museum of Modern Art in New York. Im Februar 2015 eröffnet eine große Retrospektive am Guggenheim New York. Wir wissen nicht, wo On Kawara jetzt ist, hier ist das von mir erschaffene Datums-Bild seines Todestages. Mein Mitgefühl gilt seiner Familie.
